Ubuntu Linux Help / How-to

Attaching Palm Pilots, Ipods, BG Meters, and various USB devices to VirtualBox

Once you’ve installed Virtualbox, and allowed the machine in question to have access to your USB ports, you need to do the following:

Edit (as root) /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules (I use vim, you can use nano, gedit, or whatever)Change this line :SUBSYSTEM==”usb_device”, MODE=”0664″

To :

SUBSYSTEM==”usb_device”, MODE=”0666″

For further advice see : http://www.virtualbox.org/download/UserManual.pdf

See section 10 “Troubleshooting” there is a section on USB devices.

Then, In your box, you need to select the device under the usb devices in the Device menu.

Accountability & Filtering Software for Ubuntu

Okay, here’s a touchy subject, and I don’t wish to debate the how or why of the need for this software. Let’s just assume that some folks need accountability and filtering software. If you do, and you’ve found that X3watch and NetNanny are not an option for you because you’ve joined the Ubuntu Linux revolution, then here are two easy to install apps for Ubuntu Linux that take the place of these popular Windows programs. Good luck, and may you rest easier tonight.

  • Net Responsibility Accountability Software (Yes, there is a Debian Package Installer!)
  • Dansguardian Internet Filtering Software (requires Tinyproxy or Squid. It’s in the repositories, but a pain. I’d recommend the GUI installers maintained by the Ubuntu CE community below, particularly if you’re not the one configuring it).

HOW-TO: Dreamweaver & Flash 8 Running on Ubuntu Dapper!

By: Luis Cosio

This HOW-TO covers up the whole process of installing Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 & Macromedia Flash 8 in a Ubuntu box in a few simple steps. Any questions or feedback leave them in the comments. This method can be applied also to make Macromedia Studio 8 run under Ubuntu.

- What you need?

  • A fresh install of Ubuntu Dapper + all the updates
  • A Windows box with a functional install of Dreamweaver 8 and Flash 8 or Macromedia Studio 8

IMPORTANT: I own an original license of the Macromedia Studio 8, but in order to use it under Linux sometimes the original *.exe of Flash and Dreamweaver have to be cracked or patched. I’M NOT ENCOURAGING PIRACY, I’m just presenting a method for those who have an original license and want to use it under an alternative platform.

- Fire up a terminal session and type the next commands;

TIP: Instead of using apt-get, you can install them with the Synaptic Package Manager located in the System/Administration menu

  • $ sudo apt-get update
  • $ sudo apt-get install wine and then type “yes”
  • $ sudo wine /*To create the wine file structure*/
  • $ sudo apt-get install recode and then type “yes”

- Then you need to copy all the necessary files from the Windows box;

  • Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/”
  • Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/profile/all users/Application Data/”
  • Copy the whole Macromed (No mistake with the “ai”) from “c:\Windows\system32\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/system32/”
  • Finally, copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\Common Files” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/”

- Now you need to export the registry keys of the Dreamweaver;

  • In your Windowx box, type “regedit” in the command-line and export the whole “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Macromedia/” to “macromedia.reg”, then copy it to your your Ubuntu and convert it to ascii with “$ recode ucs-2..ascii macromedia.reg”. Afterwards, type “$ sudo wine regedit macromedia.reg” to run it with wine.
  • That’s it! Type “$ wine dreamweaver.exe” or “$ wine flash.exe” and enjoy Dreamweaver & Flash in Ubuntu

- To the people who have issues with Fireworks 8

Just go to www.dll-files.com amd download the file gdiplus.dll
copy it to your system32 folder under “wine”
eg. /home/your-name/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/

Fireworks 8 should work after that

If you are able to install Tahoma font for Linux you will see them look like 99% as working in windows :-) .

Good luck to all

Ubuntu Studio Wallpapers:

Okay, no one sue me. I’m not artistic enough to have created all of these from scratch. Due to the decided lack of ubustu wallpaper out there, I put together some composites of papers I really liked. I’d like to share what I consider to be my greatest successes here. Bear in mind, these are 1440×900 res. That’s what I use. That’s what I made. Again, I make no claims to originality:

A nice 3d composite.

I did make this one from scratch in Fireworks (yes I know commercial software blah blah)
